The 9-day Machame Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the famous “Whiskey Route,” it offers a perfect balance of adventure, acclimatization, and breathtaking scenery. Additional overnight stays in Moshi before and after the trek provide comfort and recovery, while the gradual ascent significantly improves summit success rates. This unforgettable journey combines expert mountain support, stunning views, and the achievement of standing on the Roof of Africa.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. The remainder of the day is dedicated to relaxation after your international journey. In the evening, you will meet your mountain guide for a detailed trek briefing covering the route, safety procedures, altitude awareness, and equipment requirements. A gear inspection will ensure you are fully prepared for the climb ahead. Moshi’s pleasant climate and views of Mount Kilimanjaro provide the perfect introduction to your adventure. After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate where registration formalities are completed before starting your trek. The trail winds through lush rainforest filled with giant trees, colorful birds, and occasional sightings of colobus monkeys. The forest environment is often humid, and the path can be muddy, adding to the authentic wilderness experience. Your guides will introduce you to the mountain’s unique ecology while maintaining a comfortable pace. As you gain elevation, the sounds of civilization fade away and the mountain adventure truly begins. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon where your tents are prepared and a hot meal awaits.

Leaving the rainforest behind, today's route enters the heather and moorland zone. The trail climbs steadily over rocky ridges and volcanic terrain, revealing magnificent views of Mount Meru and the surrounding valleys. As vegetation becomes sparser, the landscape transforms into open high altitude wilderness. Upon reaching the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world, you'll enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak and Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. The afternoon is reserved for rest and acclimatization while taking in spectacular mountain scenery. Temperatures become noticeably cooler as you settle into camp.
Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp
Today is a key acclimatization day following the principle of “climb high, sleep low.” The route ascends gradually toward Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic formation standing at over 4,600 meters. Reaching this altitude allows your body to adapt to thinner air before descending to Barranco Camp. The alpine desert environment offers stunning views of glaciers, rocky ridges, and distant valleys. After lunch near Lava Tower, the trail descends through the beautiful Senecio Forest, known for its giant groundsels and unique vegetation. Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the impressive Barranco Wall and enjoy one of the mountain’s most scenic campsites.
Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp
The day begins with the exciting climb up the famous Barranco Wall. Although steep, this non technical scramble rewards climbers with spectacular views across the valleys below. After reaching the top, the trail traverses ridges and alpine terrain beneath Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers. The route features a series of ascents and descents designed to aid acclimatization while offering breathtaking scenery throughout the day. Karanga Camp is reached by early afternoon, providing ample time for relaxation and optional acclimatization walks. This shorter trekking day helps conserve energy for the higher elevations ahead.
Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp
Today's trek leads into the harsh alpine desert environment surrounding Barafu Camp. The terrain becomes rocky, barren, and exposed as you gain altitude. Despite the relatively short distance, the thinner air makes the climb more demanding. Along the route, enjoy spectacular views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, lunch is served before the remainder of the afternoon is dedicated to resting, hydrating, and preparing for summit night. Guides conduct a final briefing while climbers organize equipment and warm clothing. An early dinner is followed by several hours of rest before the midnight wake-up call.
Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp
Shortly after midnight, your summit attempt begins under a sky filled with stars. Guided by headlamps, you ascend steep scree slopes toward Stella Point on the crater rim. As dawn breaks, breathtaking views of glaciers, ice cliffs, and Mawenzi Peak unfold around you. After a short rest at Stella Point, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. Celebrate this remarkable achievement with photographs and unforgettable panoramic views. Following your summit success, descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a short break before continuing down to Mweka Camp. This demanding day is the highlight of the entire expedition.
Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp
After breakfast, begin the final descent through lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail gradually becomes warmer as oxygen levels increase and vegetation becomes denser. Upon reaching the gate, climbers receive official summit certificates recognizing their achievement. A transfer vehicle then returns you to Moshi where a hot shower, comfortable bed, and celebration meal await. This evening offers time to reflect on your accomplishment and share memories of your successful Kilimanjaro expedition. Relax and enjoy your final night in Tanzania’s mountain town.
