Acclimatization hike across Shira Plateau to Shira Cathedral and Shira 2 Camp

Today is a relaxed acclimatization day across the Shira Plateau. After breakfast, you hike through open moorlands with giant lobelias and volcanic rock formations. You visit Shira Cathedral, a dramatic rock pinnacle offering panoramic views of Mount Meru and surrounding landscapes. The environment feels wild and untouched, especially when mist rolls across the plateau. After exploration, you arrive at Shira 2 Camp for lunch and rest. The afternoon is free for recovery and acclimatization, improving your readiness for higher elevations ahead.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 Camp
DAY 3 Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Metrics: 7–8 hrs | 10–12 km | 3,840 m → 4,640 m → 3,960 m

Climb to Lava Tower 4,640m for climb high sleep low acclimatization to Barranco Camp

The trek begins with a steady ascent across alpine desert terrain toward Lava Tower at 4,640m. This section offers dramatic volcanic scenery and panoramic views. After lunch at Lava Tower, you descend into the lush Barranco Valley, an important acclimatization strategy known as “climb high, sleep low.” The landscape changes from barren rock to green valley surrounded by towering cliffs. You arrive at Barranco Camp in the late afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight stay. This day is key for altitude adaptation and endurance building.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp
DAY 4 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Metrics: 4–5 hrs | 6–8 km | 3,960 m → 3,963 m

Scramble up Barranco Wall and traverse alpine valley to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, descend slightly into the Barranco Valley before tackling the famous Barranco Wall. The climb is non-technical but steep and requires steady movement. At the top, you are rewarded with spectacular views of Heim and Kersten glaciers. The trail continues along ridges toward Karanga Valley, offering beautiful alpine scenery. You arrive at Karanga Camp for lunch and rest. In the afternoon, optional acclimatization hikes to higher elevation may be done before returning to camp. This stage balances effort and recovery for summit preparation.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp
DAY 5 Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Metrics: 4–5 hrs | 4–6 km | 3,963 m → 4,600 m

Ascend barren rocky terrain to Barafu Camp summit base

Today’s hike ascends steadily through barren alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, the final base before summit night. Vegetation disappears completely, leaving a rocky and exposed landscape. The climb becomes more challenging due to altitude and thin air. Upon arrival, you rest, hydrate, and prepare equipment for the midnight summit attempt. Early dinner is served, and you are advised to sleep early. The atmosphere at camp is focused and quiet as climbers prepare mentally for the final push to Uhuru Peak.

Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp

Uhuru Peak 5,895m summit push via Stella Point and descent to Millennium Camp

Around midnight, begin your summit attempt in freezing conditions, climbing slowly over volcanic scree. After several hours, reach Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Sunrise over glaciers and Mawenzi creates an unforgettable reward. After short celebrations, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and continue down to Millennium Camp for overnight stay. This is the most demanding and emotional day of the expedition, combining endurance, altitude challenge, and ultimate achievement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the Shira Route starts at a higher elevation via Londorossi Gate, spending Day 2 exploring Shira Cathedral and Day 3 climbing Lava Tower (4,640m) before descending to Barranco gives your body optimal acclimatization time.
Shira Cathedral is a dramatic volcanic rock structure standing on the edge of the Shira Plateau, offering panoramic views of Mount Meru and the western slopes of Kibo.
On Day 3, trekkers climb up to Lava Tower at 4,640m for lunch, exposing the body to high altitude, before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp (3,960m), significantly boosting oxygen adaptation.
While prior trekking experience and good cardiovascular fitness are recommended due to the high initial altitude, technical climbing skills are not required.
The midnight climb from Barafu Camp ascends steep volcanic scree over 1,290 vertical meters past Stella Point (5,756m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise.
Official Gold Certificates for Uhuru Peak and Green Certificates for Stella Point are awarded by National Park authorities at Mweka Gate on Day 7.
